In the Ampezzo Dolomites
10.09.2019-11.09.2019 - The day in Fuschl am See begins rather stressful because this evening Caro, a friend of mine from Munich, takes me to the Dolomites for the first time in my life. The trip has already been settled in spring and we originally planned to go to Chamonix. But due to the prevailing conditions we changed our minds. Even before we set off I realize that our adventures in Norway and the long drives have drained me quite a lot. In addition, my hamstring injury causes problems. Therefore, Caro and I try to plan a trip that is as relaxing as possible and to keep the climbing grades low. However, it is just an attempt because the next few days are tough and quite demanding.
Late in the evening we arrive in the Ampezzo Dolomites. We decide to sleep in the next day, to have a leisurely breakfast and to get used to the conditions by climbing the route Via Mamma e Papà (VII+ or VI+/A0, 12 pitches) on the Ra Gusela. After a short approach I am experiencing the steep and solid Dolomite rock for the first time. The protection with bolts is very good and we hardly need mobile protection. After less than 3 hours we are already on the summit and can enjoy the breathtaking view. During the descent we unfortunately choose the old path which is already closed and no longer used by hikers. It leads through a crumbling gravel gully where short steep sections have to be climbed down repeatedly. When we arrive back at the parking area, I am really enthusiastic: “This is how I always imagined climbing in the Dolomites”.

Lessons learned
- The landscape of the Dolomites is breathtaking.
- Closed hiking trails are usually closed for a good reason.
